Part time Barista Job Description

Barista

Employment status: Part-time
Typical hours: 6-14 hours per week
Starting wage after training: $18 per hour + Quarterly Bonus

The Position

East View Coffee Company is hiring a part-time WEEKEND Barista to help us accomplish our mission: roasting and sharing coffee that delights, supporting the people and communities connected to it, moving thoughtfully, and treating our team, customers and suppliers with kindness.

That’s Where You Come In!

You are outgoing, dependable and genuinely enjoy working with people. You love coffee—or are excited to learn more about it—and enjoy helping other people discover what makes it special.

As an East View barista, you will help operate our Kenosha Cafe in a way that reflects our values and mission. You will build relationships with customers, provide approachable coffee education, prepare consistently wonderful drinks and help create memorable coffee experiences for our community.

East View is a growing company where new ideas can be implemented quickly and responsibilities may evolve. Your voice will be heard, and your observations, ideas and expertise can help shape the company’s future.

We believe that compensating our team is the responsibility of the business, not our customers. East View is proudly tip-free and committed to competitive, transparent wages, opportunities for annual raises and a team bonus program.

When You’ll Work

East View is open daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Most shifts take place between 7:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., depending on opening, closing and scheduling needs.

We occasionally host community and private events outside regular business hours. Opportunities to work those events may be available, but will be scheduled separately.

Punctuality and dependable attendance are essential. When a barista is scheduled, the rest of the team is counting on that person to arrive on time and be ready to work.

Core Responsibilities

Coffee and Product Quality

  • Prepare espresso drinks, batch-brewed coffee, cold brew, pour-overs, tea and seasonal beverages consistently
  • Follow East View recipes, portion standards and presentation guidelines
  • Learn and communicate information about our coffees, producers, sourcing practices and flavor profiles
  • Participate in coffee cuppings, tastings and product-quality checks
  • Prepare syrups and other beverage ingredients
  • Maintain knowledge of food, merchandise and retail coffee products
  • Identify quality concerns and communicate them promptly

Customer Experience

  • Welcome every customer warmly and provide thoughtful, efficient service
  • Help customers select coffees and drinks without making coffee feel intimidating
  • Share useful brewing and product information
  • Build genuine relationships with regular and new customers
  • Balance speed, quality and hospitality during busy periods
  • Handle concerns calmly and respectfully
  • Maintain an inclusive environment in which customers and coworkers feel welcome

Daily Café Operations

  • Open and close the Cafe according to established procedures
  • Operate the point-of-sale system and handle cash accurately
  • Restock coffee, ingredients, merchandise and service supplies
  • Monitor inventory and communicate ordering needs
  • Follow food-safety, sanitation and handwashing procedures
  • Complete daily, weekly, quarterly and annual cleaning tasks
  • Maintain an organized, functional and visually welcoming café
  • Reduce waste by carefully following preparation, labeling and storage procedures
  • Support coworkers during rushes, breaks and transitions
  • Communicate clearly about completed tasks, problems and follow-up needs

Community Engagement

  • Help customers understand East View’s mission and community work
  • Support tastings, classes, community gatherings and special events
  • Help maintain a welcoming community room
  • Represent East View with kindness and professionalism

Requirements and Desired Skills

  • At least one year of barista experience in a fast-paced café is strongly preferred
  • Enthusiasm for customer service and working with people
  • Clear, timely and respectful communication
  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Consistent follow-through
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to give and receive feedback respectfully
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to teach others and share knowledge
  • Comfort using or learning different coffee-brewing equipment
  • Interest in ethically sourced, high-quality coffee
  • Desire to continue learning and growing professionally
  • Reliable transportation
  • Kindness, curiosity and flexibility

This position requires the ability to remain active for extended periods and to lift, carry and move café supplies and equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be available to enable qualified individuals to perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Communicates clearly and respectfully
  • Protects product quality and helps reduce waste
  • Balances speed, accuracy and hospitality during busy periods
  • Responds constructively to feedback

Pay and Benefits

Training and Starting Wages

The training wage is $16 per hour. Training continues until the employee can independently operate the front of house, consistently prepare drinks to East View’s standards and confidently serve customers while other team members take breaks or complete work elsewhere.

After successfully completing training, the wage increases to $18 per hour.

East View is a tip-free workplace. We believe it is the company’s responsibility to compensate employees directly instead of asking customers to make up part of their wages through tips.

Additional benefits include:

  • Complimentary drinks while working
  • One complimentary bag of coffee each week
  • Ongoing coffee education and professional development
  • Opportunities to participate in cuppings, product development and special projects
  • Annual wage reviews
  • Eligibility to participate in East View’s team bonus program

Annual Raises

Eligible employees receive an annual compensation review.

East View’s current annual raise structure includes:

  • A 3% cost-of-living increase
  • An additional 3% experience and performance increase, based on the employee’s performance review, professional growth, reliability and contributions to the team

Together, these increases create the opportunity for an eligible employee to receive a total annual wage increase of up to 6% under the current structure.

East View reviews its compensation program each year to make sure it remains financially sustainable and continues moving employee wages toward our living-wage goals.

Team Bonus Program

East View’s long-term goal is for every employee to earn at least a locally recognized living wage. Our team bonus program is one of the ways we are working toward that goal while the company continues to grow.

When East View meets the financial benchmarks established for a bonus period, a bonus pool will be shared among eligible employees. Our goal is to use these bonuses to help close the difference between an employee’s regular wages and the current local living-wage benchmark.

Individual bonus shares are calculated through East View’s performance-points system, which recognizes contributions such as:

  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Customer experience
  • Product quality and consistency
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Cleanliness and completion of responsibilities
  • Professional growth
  • Initiative and meaningful contributions to company goals

Bonuses are additional compensation and are separate from regular wages and annual raises. Bonus amounts may vary based on company performance, hours worked, eligibility and individual points earned. Although our goal is to help every employee reach at least the living-wage benchmark through their total compensation, bonuses are not guaranteed during every bonus period.

The complete eligibility requirements, living-wage benchmark and calculation method are explained in East View’s separate bonus-program policy.

Who We Are

East View Coffee Company is a woman-owned coffee roastery and café in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

We believe coffee can be a force for good. We roast exceptional coffee while intentionally supporting women coffee producers, contributing one percent of our sales to environmental nonprofits through 1% for the Planet, investing in local organizations and community gathering, and creating a caring, tip-free workplace.

Diversity and inclusion do not happen by accident. We value, respect and support people across identities and experiences, including differences in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability and ability.

Our goals are to:

  1. Roast and serve coffee that genuinely delights our customers.
  2. Introduce more people to thoughtfully sourced, high-quality coffee.
  3. Support women-owned and women-led coffee farms and producer groups.
  4. Take care of our world and home.
  5. Use our coffee, resources and gathering space to power good in our community.
  6. Build a workplace where people are treated with kindness, dignity and respect.

How We Move Thoughtfully: Our Values and Culture

Assume positive intent.
We begin by assuming the best in one another. We are complex people with lives outside work, and we communicate directly and kindly when problems arise.

Be kind—to customers, coworkers and yourself.
Kindness shapes how we serve, communicate, solve problems and work together.

Do epic things.
We have an ambitious mission and big ideas. Doing things differently creates obstacles, so we approach challenges as problem-solvers and work together to create better systems and solutions.

Always be growing.
We stay curious, welcome feedback and continue developing our knowledge and skills. Growth is part of the work.

Work your strengths.
We want people to use and develop what they do best. Clear communication, expectations and shared problem-solving help each person contribute meaningfully.

Rest is important.
Not every task is an emergency. We believe people do better work when they care for themselves and maintain realistic boundaries and expectations.

Who We Are

We are a women-owned coffee roastery that wants to empower others from marginalized communities. Diversity and inclusion do not happen by accident or luck. We value, respect, and support all types of diversity across all identities, not limited to ethnicity, race, gender, LGBTQIA, age, religion, and abilities.

We are committed to giving back to our communities through our Powering the Good and 1% for the Planet programs.

Mission & Values

Make It Delightful

It's our mission to make really delicious coffee accessible. This means exemplary customer service and a space focused on hospitality and education. We love the extra touches - cleanliness, creative syrups made right here, and attentive to our community's dietary preferences (vegan & gluten free? We got you).

Moving Thoughtfully, With Kindness

On the throughline from the origin to the customer, we use the pillar of Kindness to guide us. Is our sourcing kind to producers and to the land, or in what ways can we be kind to employees? This has led us to some key practices such as sourcing almost exclusively from women producers, paying our baristas a living wage and giving back to our local community.

Play & Teamwork

Everyone gets a chance to shine here. We're small enough to place you where your strengths are realized, and growing fast enough to create new roles and responsibilities if you're eager for them. We are team focused and love the opportunity to make something you love part of the atmosphere.
