How to tell if coffee is ethically sourced
Start with transparency. Look for clear origin details, farm or cooperative names, and harvest notes on the bag or product page. Certifications help too - Fair Trade and Organic are third‐party audited, which means there are defined standards around labor and environment. However, we've learned that the best way to really ensure you understand what's happening on farms or in cooperatives is through relationships, which is why we prefer terms like direct trade or relationship coffee, which signal roasters maintain ongoing partnerships and pay premiums beyond commodity pricing. We love our relationships with Marianella, Kathia and the Schippers family!
The simplest check is this. Does the roaster explain who grew the coffee, how price premiums support producers, and how the beans were processed and shipped? At East View, we prioritize women farm owners and managers and pay a premium that goes back into farm leadership, training, and household income. When women control more of the coffee income, communities benefit. You will often taste the difference in careful
harvesting and sorting, and the farmers will absolutely feel the impact.
Why premiums to women farmers matter
Premiums change what is possible on a farm. They help fund seedlings, soil health, and drying beds. They make space for training, education, and leadership development. When women have direct access to higher pay, families see better nutrition, school attendance, and healthcare. In coffee, quality and equity move together. Paying more for women‐produced lots rewards excellence and builds resilience for the next harvest.
What coffee to buy as a gift
Match the gift to the drinker.
For the everyday sipper who loves smooth and balanced, grab a medium roast blend with notes of chocolate and cherry. It brews beautifully across drip, pour over, and French press.
For the curious taster, pick single origin beans that show a sense of place, or a truly special barrel aged coffee, with notes of bourbon, toasted grain and allspice.
For decaf drinkers, choose decaf coffee that still shines in sweetness and body. A great decaf pulls espresso or brews drip with ease.
For the espresso lover, a chocolatey, slightly darker profile makes milk drinks sing while staying sweet on its own.
For the host, give a 5 lb bag deal to keep the kitchen stocked through the holidays. Big savings, fewer last minute store runs.
If you want a ready to‐wrap option, our holiday gift bundle is the perfect option with craft chocolate, a charming mug and a coffee bag of your choice.
How about an ethical coffee gift subscription? Choose your roast profile and send a coffee lover three months of delightful mornings. Make sure to leave us a note with any extra information or a personalized note for us to include for a thoughtful and unique gift.

Craft a jar of house-made syrup and gift a bag of cold brew. When all else fails a gift card for freshly roasted coffee is always win!
