Telling Coffee Stories: Barrel Aged No. 3
You know something good is coming when you see Jenny pushing a large barrel around the Tasting Room day after day.
Last year we experimented with a Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee and it had rave reviews. This year for the holidays we wanted to mix it up and try something new and festive - a Brandy Barrel Aged Coffee.
What is Barrel Aged Coffee?
Simply put: we take green coffee beans and put them in a still wet spirits barrel to take a nice, boozy nap. After several weeks we take them out and roast them to a balanced medium roast. The result is a totally unique coffee experience, with extra warm and fruity flavor notes.
For the coffee we chose our Cafe Con Amor. Our ethically sourced direct trade coffee from Costa Rica is a best seller on its own but a remarkable coffee to barrel age.
Of course, we didn't use just any old brandy barrel. Driftless Glen consistently wins accolades for their spirits, and we knew we wanted their gorgeous brandy barrel for this experiment. Made using French grapes and aging the brandy for 5 years in French oak, they then cask finish the spirit in a used bourbon barrel. The result is exquisite, warm and complex.
Here's where it gets good - the cherry and vanilla and oak notes from the brandy mix with the orange and sweet honey notes from the Cafe Con Amor to bring you a boozy fruitcake coffee experience. Fruitcake sometimes gets a bad rep, so let us assure you that boozy coffee fruitcake is the good stuff. The real good stuff.
The first roast is ready for you to bring home and share. Get ready, this one is a treat.
